Can’t decide between a chai tea latte and an espresso latte? Choose the best of both and opt for a dirty chai latte. What exactly is dirty chai? It’s simply a chai latte with a shot of espresso. I enjoy the addition of espresso to chai because it tempers the sweetness and adds a background flavor of coffee. Plus, sometimes an extra hit of caffeine is needed!
Since it’s October, and everyone is going crazy for pumpkin, I decided to make a pumpkin dirty chai. This drink is part of the virtual pumpkin party, a celebration of food bloggers sharing their favorite pumpkin recipes. You can find links to all of the recipes by visiting the pumpkin party hosts, Sara and Aimee.
Pumpkin Dirty Chai Recipe
1 cup liquid chai tea concentrate (I used Tazo)
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
2 shots espresso
In a small heavy saucepan combine chai tea concentrate, milk and pumpkin. Heat over medium heat until steaming, whisking frequently. (Do not boil.)
Divide espresso shots between 2 mugs; top with hot chai tea mixture. If desired, sprinkle with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.
Makes 2 servings
Tip: If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can substitute 1/2 cup cold brew coffee concentrate. Simply add to the pan and heat with the rest of the tea mixture.
